RESUMEN

Ecological fishery management requires high-precision fishery information to support resource management and marine spatial planning. In this paper, the Automatic Identification System (AIS) was adopted to extract the spatial information on the fishing grounds of light purse seine vessels in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. The spatial distributions of fishing grounds mapped by the data mining, kernel density analysis and hotspot analysis methods were compared. The spatial similarity index was applied to determine the spatial consistency between the computed spatial information and fisheries resource information. Finally, the spatial information derived by the best method was used to investigate the characteristics of fishing activity. The results showed that: the speed of light purse seine vessels related to operations was lower than 1.6 knots. The spatial information extracted by the three methods was consistent with the catch data distribution, and the spatial similarity between the fishing effort and catch data was the highest. The spatial variation in fishing activity was similar to that in the chub mackerel migration route. AIS data could be used to provide high-resolution fishery information. Light purse seine fishing vessels typically operate and travel along the exclusive economic zone boundary, and increased attention must be given to fishing vessel operation supervision. A comprehensive supervision system can be employed to monitor the operations of fishing vessels more effectively. The results of this study can provide technical support for the management of fishing activities and conservation of marine resources in this region using AIS data.

RESUMEN

Ocean acidification (OA) and microplastics (MPs) contamination are two results of human excises. In regions like estuarine areas, OA and MPs exposure are happening at the same time. The current research investigated the synthesized effects of OA and MPs exposure for a medium-term duration on the physiology and energy budget of the thick shell mussel Mytilus coruscus. Mussels were treated by six combinations of three MPs levels (0, 10 and 1000 items L-1) × two pH levels (7.3, 8.1) for 21 d. As a result, under pH 7.3, clearance rate (CR), food absorption efficiency (AE), respiration rate (RR), and scope for growth (SFG) significantly decreased, while the fecal organic dry weight ratio (E) significantly increased. 1000 items L-1 MPs led to decrease of CR, E, SFG and increase of AE under pH 8.1. Interactive effects from combination of pH and MPs were found in terms of CR, AE, E and RR, but not for SFG of M. coruscus.

RESUMEN

An anion exchanger has been described by grafting dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate methylchloride (DMC) onto the poly(glycidyl methacrylate-divinylbenzene) (GMA-DVB) subtract. The grafting was performed by coupling of DMC with the pendant double bonds of DVB. Prior to grafting, a hydrolysis treatment to free epoxide groups associated with GMA-DVB substrate enables an improved hydrophilic surface of the obtained anion exchanger. The capacity of the obtained anion exchanger can be manipulated by controlling DMC amount to a great degree. Common seven inorganic anions onto the anion exchanger could be well separated within 20 min and high separation efficiency was obtained, e.g. 46,500/m of the plate count for chloride.

RESUMEN

A novel hydrophilic polymer-based anion exchanger has been described for ion chromatography (IC). It is prepared by grafting polyethyleneimine (PEI) onto the poly(glycidylmethacrylate-divinylbenzene) (GMA-DVB) substrate, followed by hydrolytic treatment to convert the residual epoxide groups onto the surface of GMA-DVB substrates to hydroxyl groups, finally quaternized PEI by a molecule containing epoxide group. Hydrophobic surface of GMA-DVB substrate can be converted to hydrophilic, aiming to reduce unwanted non-ionic interaction from the substrate. After optimizing the reaction conditions, the obtained anion exchanger showed good separation towards standard inorganic anions under the suppressed mode and complete elution of seven common inorganic anions could be achieved in less than 16 min by using potassium bicarbonate eluent. It also demonstrated fast dynamic kinetic and enabled the separation of 7 anions within 3 min at the isocratic mode. Column efficiency of the anion exchanger was up to 34,000 /m.

RESUMEN

In this article, 3-(3,5-di- tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid (DBHP)-functionalized ZnO (DBHP-ZnO) nanoparticles were synthesized by decomposing the organometallic precursor Zn(DBHP)2 under alkaline conditions. This in situ surface modification method can induce small-sized ZnO nanoparticles (5 nm) and form strong linkage between DBHP and ZnO nanoparticles. DBHP as an organic compound hindered phenol antioxidant that not only improved the dispersion stability of the prepared DBHP-ZnO nanoparticles in the lubrication oil but also scavenged free radicals produced during the oxidation process of oil. Compared with DBHP, the thermal stability of the prepared composite antioxidant was greatly enhanced by introducing inorganic ZnO nanoparticles, which was proved by the results of the thermogravimetric analysis test. A rotary oxygen bomb test, pressurized differential scanning calorimetry, and free-radical-scavenging method all showed that DBHP-ZnO nanoparticles had better antioxidant properties than DBHP under high temperature in the base oil of di- iso-octylsebacate (DIOS). The activation energy of the oxidation process was used to analyze this result by the model-free methods, including the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method and the Kissinger equation. The calculated results showed that DIOS containing DBHP-ZnO nanoparticles have the lowest reaction constant and the longest half-life period compared to those of individual DBHP and ZnO nanoparticles, which is attributed to the combined action of the organic-inorganic composites. Besides, DBHP-ZnO nanoparticles as the additive are able to improve the antiwear ability of DIOS to some extent. Therefore, the as-prepared DBHP-ZnO nanoparticles with desired dispersibility as well as better thermal stability and antioxidant ability than DBHP in the DIOS base oil could be a potential high-performance nanocomposite additive for a synthetic lubricant base oil like DIOS.

RESUMEN

Bottom trawling is one of the most efficient fishing activities, but serious and persistent ecological issues have been observed by fishers, scientists and fishery managers. Although China has applied the Beidou fishing vessel position monitoring system (VMS) to manage trawlers since 2006, little is known regarding the impacts of trawling on the sea bottom environments. In this study, continuous VMS data of the 1403 single-rig otter trawlers registered in the Xiangshan Port, 3.9% of the total trawlers in China, were used to map the trawling effort in 2013. We used the accumulated distance (AD), accumulated power distance (APD), and trawling intensity as indexes to express the trawling efforts in the Yellow Sea (YS) and East China Sea (ECS). Our results show that all three indexes had similar patterns in the YS and ECS, and indicated a higher fishing effort of fishing grounds that were near the port. On average, the seabed was trawled 0.73 times in 2013 over the entire fishing region, and 51.38% of the total fishing grounds were with no fishing activities. Because of VMS data from only a small proportion of Chinese trawlers was calculated fishing intensity, more VMS data is required to illustrate the overall trawling effort in China seas. Our results enable fishery managers to identify the distribution of bottom trawling activities in the YS and ECS, and hence to make effective fishery policy.

RESUMEN

A new and facile approach was established to fabricate thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAA) coated iron oxide nanoparticles in a non-aqueous medium. The morphology and structure of the nanoparticle-doped composite were analyzed by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transformation infrared spectrometry (FTIR). The thermosensitivity of the composite was also investigated. Results indicated that the oil-soluble iron oxide nanoparticles encapsulated with PNIPAA, composed of an inorganic iron oxide core and biocompatible PNIPAA shell, were dispersed well in water and had a sphere-like shape. The PNIPAA-coated iron oxide nanoparticles with such a kind of core-shell structure showed excellent thermosensitivity. Namely, the aqueous suspension of PNIPAA-coated iron oxide nanoparticles dramatically changed from transparent to opaque as the temperature increased from room temperature to 38 °C, showing potential as optical transmittance switch materials and their significance in the fields of protein adsorption and purification controlled release, and drug delivery.
